Winston-Salem, NC – After screening 19 terrifying films from October 21-23, 2022 at a/perture cinema in Winston-Salem and online, the Queer Fear Film Festival judges and the festival audience have selected three films and one feature screenplay to receive the festival’s inaugural Golden Unicorn awards.

Queer Fear Film Festival awarded Best Feature to Mystery Solved, directed by Tim Connolly. Mystery Solved kept audiences on the edge of their seat while also leaving them in tears from laughter. After the conclusion of the final screening block, programmers tallied votes from the audience and Mystery Solved was also selected to receive the Audience Choice Award. This film maintained a balance of horror, gore, and humor, creating an unforgettable movie watching experience.

Best Short was awarded to All the Way Down, This Time, directed by Michael Rogerson. Michael and Sophie Neff, who wrote and acted in the short, participated in a Q&A after their screening. Programming Coordinator Anna Crosby led their Q&A. “It was such a pleasure to award Michael and Sophieour Best Short award for their film All the Way Down, This Time. Hearing about their process and the inspiration behind their film was a great way to end their screening block.” This film is beautifully shot and left the audience unsettled and in awe.

The Best Student Film was awarded to Mylo Butler for Sundown Town. Mylo is a recent graduate from Pratt Institute. His film captures the horrors a couple encounters after a pitstop in an unwelcoming town. With stunning visuals and a haunting story, Mylo’s film was a compelling watch all the way through and an instant favorite with our judges.

The Best Feature Screenplay was awarded to Blood Moon Sisters, written by Mae Hoffman. This story follows a young woman trapped in a small town. As she investigates crimes committed by supernatural beings, she encounters a vampire mistress.

A huge congratulations to this year’s award winners!
